  • As the kingdom of Northumbria under King Edwin, the region's historical boundaries stretched from the Humber in the south to the Forth in the north.
It has a long and violent history, and there are more Castles here than anywhere else in England.......
The county was also a centre for Roman Catholicism in England, as well as of Jacobite feelings after the Restoration.
Northumberland became a sort of wild county, where outlaws and Border Reivers hid from the law.
However, the frequent cross-border skirmishes and accompanying local lawlessness largely subsided after the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England under King James I.
In this part of England all of the above facts are what I would call "New History".
Its also home to Hadrian's Wall built by the Roman Empire across the width of
    what is now northern England.
One thousand six hundred years ago, the Emperor Hadrian cast his eyes North, from these Cliffs and decided the Civilized World ended, where he stood.
The site is now owned by the National Trust and is currently in the care of English Heritage.
